About Dr John Mackintosh
MBBS(Hons), FRACP — Specialist Respiratory and Lung Transplant Physician
Dr John Mackintosh graduated from The University of Queensland in 2011 with honours. He trained in respiratory medicine in Queensland, before completing an interstitial lung disease clinical fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London — one of the world's leading interstitial lung disease (ILD) referral centres.
He returned to Brisbane in 2019 as a Respiratory & Lung Transplant Physician with the Queensland Lung Transplant Service at The Prince Charles Hospital, and as an academic at The University of Queensland, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in recognition of his clinical and research contribution to ILD. He leads The Prince Charles Hospital's ILD service and his research work centres on ILD, with particular expertise in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, familial pulmonary fibrosis and the genetic underpinnings of fibrotic lung disease.
Alongside his clinical practice, he co-chairs the Queensland Statewide ILD Multidisciplinary Meeting and is founder and chair of the Australasian ILD Genetics Multidisciplinary Meeting. Internationally, he was a Co-Lead for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation's first consensus statement on short telomere syndrome and lung transplantation, and is first author of the current Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand position statement on the treatment of IPF and progressive pulmonary fibrosis.
