Clinical Expertise
Dr Mackintosh provides assessment and ongoing management of interstitial lung disease (ILD) and related conditions for patients across Brisbane and Queensland.
Interstitial lung disease & pulmonary fibrosis
Interstitial Lung Disease
A broad group of conditions causing scarring or inflammation of the lung tissue. Dr Mackintosh co-chairs the Queensland Statewide ILD Multidisciplinary Meeting.
Interstitial lung diseaseIdiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
A progressive fibrotic lung disease of unknown cause. Dr Mackintosh is first author of the current Australian and New Zealand treatment guideline for IPF.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosisProgressive Pulmonary Fibrosis
A pattern of worsening fibrosis over time, occurring in IPF or other fibrotic ILDs. Dr Mackintosh is first author of Australia and New Zealand's PPF treatment guideline.
Progressive pulmonary fibrosisConnective Tissue Disease (CTD-ILD)
Interstitial lung disease occurring alongside conditions such as systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory myopathies, managed jointly with rheumatology.
Connective tissue disease-associated ILDHypersensitivity Pneumonitis
ILD triggered by inhaled environmental or occupational antigens, requiring identification and avoidance of the trigger where possible.
Hypersensitivity pneumonitisAsbestosis
Pulmonary fibrosis caused by occupational asbestos exposure, an important cause of ILD in Queensland given its industrial history.
AsbestosisSarcoidosis
A granulomatous condition most often affecting the lungs and chest lymph nodes, including complex and fibrotic pulmonary disease.
SarcoidosisGenetics & familial disease
Familial Interstitial Lung Disease
Pulmonary fibrosis occurring in two or more blood relatives, often linked to inherited gene variants. Dr Mackintosh founded and chairs the Australasian ILD Genetics Multidisciplinary Meeting.
Familial interstitial lung diseaseTelomere Biology Disorders
Short telomere syndromes that can present with pulmonary fibrosis. Dr Mackintosh led the first international consensus statement on this topic for the ISHLT.
Telomere biology disordersGenetics
Genetic evaluation for pulmonary fibrosis and ILD, including testing for telomere-related and surfactant-related genes and genetic counselling.
Genetics in ILDLung transplantation
Lung Transplantation
As a physician with the Queensland Lung Transplant Service at The Prince Charles Hospital, Dr Mackintosh assesses patients with advanced or progressive lung disease for suitability for lung transplantation, including patients with telomere biology disorders, where pre- and post-transplant management requires specific consideration.
